Jacqueline Sawyer Smith, 60, of 1315 Chances Lane, Elizabeth City, NC passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family and friends on Saturday, October 11, 2014 after a short illness. Born in Pasquotank County, she was the daughter of Earline Alexander Sawyer of Elizabeth City, NC and the late Myrion Gerald Sawyer and was the wife of Tommy “Smitty” Smith. Mrs. Smith had worked as the office manager for State Farm for twelve years, M.G. Sawyer, Inc. Family Clothing Store for over twenty years and finally as a receptionist at Tarheel Internal Medicine for seven years prior to retiring to help care for her mother. She was a member of Berea Baptist Church and a former member of the Elizabeth City Chamber of Commerce. Jackie was a truly selfless and humble person whose happiness was dependent upon bringing joy to others.

In addition to her mother and her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Andrea L. Smith of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Jeremy T. Smith and fiancé Meredith McCarthy of Kitty Hawk, NC; a brother, Jerry Sawyer of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers-in-law, Sam Smith and wife Kim of Elizabeth City, NC and Edward C. Melton of Virginia Beach, VA; an uncle, Donald Alexander and wife Miriam of Elizabeth City, NC; four aunts, Shirley Basnight, Affie Bateman and Fannie B. Creef, all of Elizabeth City, NC and Valna “Peanut” Jones and husband Billy of Hertford, NC; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and her dog, Lucy. Along with her father, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Rebecca Smith Melton; and an aunt, Deloris Chambers.

A memorial service will take place Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Berea Baptist Church. Twiford Funeral Home, Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City is assisting the Smith family.
