Martin was a farmer, yet around 1900 he opened a small restaurant and store, The Depot, across the street from the train depot in New Martinsville, WV. In about 1901 he opened a hotel adjacent to the restaurant, bordering the railroad tracks, at ~248 North Street. It is not know why he left the restaurant and hotel, yet in 1914 he was in Salt Lake City, Utah with his family and was working for one of the railroads.
