Tom was the adopted son of Frederick N. ZIMMERMAN (1926-2013) and V. Jane JOHNSON (1924-2004). He grew up in Mishawaka, Indiana, and graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1968. On July 7, 1973, in St. Joseph County, Indiana, Tom married. Twin daughters were born to the marriage before the marriage ended in divorce. He served in the U.S. Navy and was an accountant for Goodwill Industries at the time of his death. Tom was a charter member of the District 11 Umpire Association in South Bend, and also belonged to the Indiana State Umpire Association, the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association, the Amateur Softball Association, and American Turners of South Bend. He was assistant district administrator for Little League. Tom was survived by his twin daughters and his parents; 16 years after his death, Tom had two granddaughters. Cremation was arranged by Warner Funeral Home, Osceola, Indiana. His obituary and death notice were published in the South Bend Tribune (South Bend, Indiana), on September 6 and 7, 1988 (page B-7 on both days).
