Rosewell Waite's Mother Is Dead.

Mrs. Ann Waite, mother of Rosewell Waite and the indirect cause of the tragedy that cost the life of Police Officer Frank Skidmore and the permanent injuries of officer John Atkinson died Wednesday morning at the home of Mrs. Frank Swineford of Croton and Hans avenues, where she had been living for some months past. Tuberculosis was the cause of dissolution.

She was over 70 years of age and was the widow of Calvin Waite a veteran of the Civil war, who died several years ago. She is survived alone by her son, Rosewell Waite, who is now serving a 15-year penitentiary sentence for shooting the officers. Had Mrs. Waite lived just ten days longer she would have soon the second anniversary of the murder.

She had lived in this city many years and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church. Her last years were troubled and her death was probably greatly hastened by the actions of her wayward son. She last saw him several months ago when she made a special trip to the Allegheny penitentiary to bid him a last good-bye, realizing she would never see him again. That meeting was affecting in the extreme as the mother broke down and could not be consoled.

The night of the shooting Mrs. Waite told a representative of The News in police headquarters, that her son had been drinking and abusing her and so she asked a neighbor to call an officer. Two responded instead on one, by direction of Chief of Police Horner and both were shot. Waite, in his own defense after he was caught the following May, alleged the technicality that he was defending his home and that the officers had no warrant for his arrest. This defense saved him from the gallows, but he was convicted a year ago last June of manslaughter and sentenced to the penitentiary for 15 years.

Funeral services Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Swineford home.
