Mrs. Emma Shumate, widow of Hiram Shumate, who was Sangamon county's last Civil war veteran before his death in 1948, died at 2:30 p.m. August 29, 1952. She was 93 years old.

Born in Curran and educated in Curren schools, Mrs. Shumate was a member of the Riverton Methodist church and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Gibson, Curran; two sons, Harry Parkinson, Enumclaw, Wash., and Fred Parkinson, Springfield; a sister, Mrs. Mary Wendling, Curran; a brother, Louis Search, Sunnyside, Wash.; and six grandchildren.
