Rev John Thomas Bonner was a son of Zadock Bonner, Sr and Susan Johnson. John married three times and fathered a total of 23 children. His first marriage was on Nov 13, 1835 to Martha Gillispie, second to Martha Ann Upchurch on Sep 3, 1857 and last marriage to Lucy J Wood on Aug 7, 1881.

Rev Bonner was one of the founding members of the Old Camp Methodist Church where he was ordained as Minister on July 20, 1870.

John Thomas Bonner was regarded as one of the most successful men of Carroll County, GA, owning 1200 acres of land, a mill and ginnery some two miles east of Bonner's Gold Mine, which was owned by his brother, Zadock Bonner, Jr. He was frequently elected to the Board of County Commissioners and was elected to the GA Legislature in 1882.
