The Reverend William R. Dermott died on 10 December 2015, at his home in Norfolk, Virginia, at the age of 62. Born in Hazleton, Father Dermott was the son of the late William R. Dermott, Senior, and Rita M. (Brown) Dermott.

Survivors: He is survived by his sisters, Rita Malpedo and husband Richard, of Port Charlotte, Florida, and Mary Haak and husband Morgan, of Breinigsville, Pennsylvania; nieces Rita Marie Malpedo and Melissa Forte, her husband Nicholas Forte, and their three children.

Father Dermott attended Immaculate Conception School, Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania; Jim Thorpe High School, and the University of Scranton. He studied for the Priesthood at Saint Pius X Seminary, Dalton, Pennsylvania, and completed his formation at Mount Saint Mary's Seminary, Emmitsburg, Maryland, where he received a Master's Degree in Divinity. He was ordained to the Priesthood on 18 September 1982 by The Most Reverend Joseph M. McShea, D.D., at the Cathedral Church of Saint Catharine of Siena, Allentown.

His first Priestly assignment was Parochial Vicar at Saint Catharine of Siena Church, Mount Penn, Reading, followed by Parochial Vicar, Saint Jane Frances de Chantal Church, Easton; Parochial Vicar, Saint Ursula Church, Fountain Hill; Parochial Vicar, Saint Anne Church, Bethlehem; Parochial Vicar, Saints Simon and Jude Church, Bethlehem, and Administrator, Assumption Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Slatington. He was then named Pastor of Assumption Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Slatington.

Having been commissioned as a United States Navy Chaplain (Reserves) in Sept. 1984, in Dec. 2000, Fr. Dermott was released by his bishop to enter Active Duty. Among his assignments were 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Okinawa, Japan (2000-2003); USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71), Norfolk VA (2003-05); Naval Air Station Keflavik, Iceland (2005-06); Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, Norfolk VA (2006-09); and back-to-back tours aboard his final assignment: USS BATAAN (LHD 5), Norfolk VA (2009-15). Fr. Dermott loved his Sailors and Marines, and was recognized for his pastoral heart, administrative skills, and pragmatic insights - always about helping others. At 1130 hours on July 1,, 2015, he was retired from Active Duty military service.

Services: A Mass of Christian Burial for Father Dermott will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 180 West Broadway, Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, 19 December 2015 at 11:00 AM by His Excellency, the Most Reverend John O. Barres, J.C.L., D.D., Bishop of Allentown. The Homilist will be the Reverend Monsignor Edward S. Zemanik, Pastor, Saint Ambrose Church, Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania. Calling hours will be held on 19 December 2015 in Immaculate Conception Church, 180 West Broadway, Jim Thorpe, before Mass, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Interment will take place in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania.
