Nathaniel participated in his daughter's education. He often tutored them. He taught daughter Elizabeth Latin which eventually inspired her to learn 10 other languages. His wife Elizabeth was a school teacher and encouraged her daughters to become teachers as well. Nathaniel Hawthorne had sent money to his sister in-law Elizabeth Palmer Peabody for Dr. Nathaniel Peabody's Eagelswood expenses, and upon his death for her to use it for his funeral. In his last days, the old doctor had changed his mind about wanting to be buried next to his wife Elizabeth and chose instead the Eagleswood cemetery**. Although this choice should have cost Elizabeth Palmer less money, not more, she apparently still needed funds for his expenses and asked the Hawthornes for more.
