Hans Hougaard (Haggardt) was the son of Johannes Madsen and Karen Nilsen Madsen (from his marriage record to Katrina). He immigrated in 1869. Hans married Ane Margrethe Johnson in 1871 in Dudee, Illinois. She migrated to the US to marry him. They lived in Dundee until 1879 when they moved to Sac County, Iowa and acquired a farm in the vicinity of Lake View. After Hans retired from farming the family moved to Larchwood, Iowa where Ane Margrethe died on December 24, 1908. They were the parents of 8 children: Kate (m Terkel Hansen), John M (1874, m Jessie), Peter J (1878 IL), Jennie M (1880), Louis (1882 IA), George (1884), Anna N (1886), and Fred L (1890).
He married Katrina M. Jacobson Nelson on 8 September 1912 in Humboldt, Humboldt, Iowa.
