Sharron Mays Lawn, 66, lifelong resident of Ware County, died peacefully Saturday (Dec. 12, 2015) at Waycross Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born May 31, 1949, the daughter of the late Bill and Jean (Bagley) Mays, she was a long-time professor of English at South Georgia State College (at the
time known as Waycross College). A 1967 graduate of Ware County High School, she served as editor of the literary magazine and coordinator of the school radio program, “Voice of the Gators.” During high school she won
many leadership, essay and scholarship awards. She also played clarinet in the marching band. In 1968, she won the 4-H Club National Public Speaking Award and received the Atlanta Journal Leadership Award for her 4-H
work throughout Georgia. She also served as a counselor at Georgia’s
largest 4-H camp, Rock Eagle in Eatonton. She graduated first in class from
Wesleyan College in Macon in 1971 where she was editor-in-chief of the college newspaper, editor of the literary magazine, executive stunt chairman and a member of every honor society on campus. She is survived by her beloved son, William Lawn, and her sister, Janice Mays, both of Arlington,Va. Her former husband, Tony Lawn, preceded her in death earlier this year. She also leaves many friends and former students (among them a number of nurses who lovingly cared for her these last years) who will miss her humor and intelligence, as well as her loving disposition
and beautiful smile.
She will be buried at Oakland Cemetery in a private graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be given in Sharron’s name to Waycross Health and Rehabilitation Center, 1010 Dorothy St., to Wesleyan College, Forsythe Road, Macon, Ga., or to Rock Eagle 4-H Center,
Eatonton, Ga.
