She married first to Lee James (Sept. 14, 1903 - Aug. 06, 1948 AL). They were married on December 20, 1925 in St. Clair County, Alabama.

She married second to Clyde Dennis Bates (July 23, 1911 AL - Aug. 07, 1987 AL).

Graveside service was to be at 2 p.m. today at Deerman's Chapel Cemetery for Roberta V. Bates, 82, Route 1 Steele, who died Tuesday, May 4, 1993. The Revs. Troy Dillard and Joe Wise were to officiate. Morgan Funeral Chapel was in charge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde D. Bates, her parents and her grandparents.

She is survived by daughter, Jeanette James, Birmingham; sons, Leroy James, Fort Myers, Fla., Hermon B. James, California, and Garry G. Bates, Steele; sisters, Lillie Wallace, Albertville, Ophia Hartline, Wood River, Ill., and Johnnie Gilliland, Catoosa, Okla.; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Charles Abercrombie, Stan Davis, Sport Hollingsworth, Johnny Hyatt, Robert Robinson and Terry Tibbs.

Bates, Clyde Denise

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Deerman's Chapel Methodist Church for Clyde Denise Bates, 76, Steele Rt. 1, who died Friday, Aug. 7, 1987, from injuries received in an auto accident.

The Rev. Doc Tidwell and Cobb Hallmark will officiate. Burial in adjoining cemetery. Morgan Funeral Home of Attalla is in charge.

Mr. Bates was a native of Etowah County and a resident of St. Clair County for a number of years. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Roberta Bates; one daughter, Frankie Battles; two sons, Clyde Junior and Gary Gene Bates, all of Steele; several grandchildren.

The body will remain at the funeral home until the hour of service. The family will receive friends after 3 p.m. today.
