Martha left high school to care for her aging parents. She later moved to California - joining two of her older sisters there. There was no adult education in those days, so Martha attended high school with teenagers and graduated from Inglewood, Calif., High School in 1949 at the age of 28. Martha then attended Arizona State College and graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor of science degree in dietetics. She performed an internship at the University of Oregon, Portland, and did rotations at area hospitals.
She was employed at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Los Angeles where she conducted research on saturated and unsaturated fats. She also worked for several retirement homes before retiring at the age of 75.
She was a member of the Baikoen Bonsai Club in Southern California.
