Samuel Jackson Elliott

Reverend Samuel Jackson “Jack” Elliott, 93, of Chattaroy, passed away on December 12, 2015, at his residence.

Born December 28, 1921, in Ranger, WV, he was a son of the late Everett Elliott and Minta McClellan Elliott Gibson.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Irene Collins Elliott; four sisters, Marilyn Greene, Zella Lewis, Ruth Metcalf and Thelma Akers; and a brother, Ward Elliott.

A World War II Navy veteran, Jack served in the Pacific Theater during the Battle of Saipan. He later attended Midwestern Baptist College and became an ordained minister. He served at a number of churches before returning to his native West Virginia in 1974. He was also retired from Wolf Creek Collieries.

Jack was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His love of family was strong and abiding. He deeply loved and enjoyed the great outdoors and spent innumerable pleasant hours engaging in his favorite sports of hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and he was a longtime and dedicated member of Grace Baptist Temple.

Jack is survived by a beloved son, Greg and his wife, Phyllis Elliott of Chattaroy; a loving daughter Sheila, and her husband, Mike Ball of Chattaroy; six grandchildren, Kerri (Todd) Taylor, Karla (Rodney) Mattney, Gregory (Jennifer) Elliott, Chris (Dawn) Ball, Steve (Teresa) Ball and Rebecka (Steven) Riley; 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his good friend and neighbor, Joe Rumore and his longtime confidant and pastor, the Reverend Ron Sanger.

Jack will be missed and lovingly remembered by his family, his community and his brothers and sisters at Grace Baptist Temple.

Visitation is from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Tuesday evening, December 15, 2015, at Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, December 16, at the mortuary. The Reverend Ron Sanger will officiate.

Interment is in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher, WV.

Jack’s grandsons will serve as his pallbearers.
