Died "Rio Seco" District=The area bordered on the west by modern day Highway 99, but south of Harter road, approximately 10 miles NW of Oroville. Rio Seco had a school and post office pre-1900.

Chico Record, Tuesday Morning, February 20, 1917, pg 6 col 8: S.J. Patterson, Rio Seco Rancher, Dies. Oroville, Feb. 19. – Samuel Jacob Patterson, well known rancher of the Rio Seco district, passed away last evening at 7:15. Death was due to tuberculosis, from which the deceased had been seriously ill for about five months.

Patterson was a native of Illinois and had reached the age of sixty years. He moved to California in 1867 and for thirty-six years resided at his ranch in the Rio Seco district.

A widow and two brothers, W.H. Patterson, of Dayton, Ore., and H.M. Patterson of Durham; and two sisters, Mrs. H.H. Barnham of Dayton, Ore., and Mrs. C.L. Strong of Red Bluff, survive.
