Holland Hunter
Holland Hunter, Economist, Holland Hunter, an expert on Russian transportation policy and professor emeritus of economics at Haverford College, died Saturday January 18th of pneumonia at The Quadrangle in Haverford, Pennsylvania. He was 92 years old. Dr. Hunter grew up in Geneva Illinois, the son of real estate developer Harry Holland Hunter and Hester Hunter, advertising copywriter. He graduated from the Fountain Valley School in Colorado and received his B.S. in Economics from Haverford College in 1943. After obtaining an M.A. in 1947 and a PhD in 1949 from Harvard University, both in Economics, he returned to Haverford College where he taught Economics for the rest of his career. Dr. Hunter specialized in transportation policy in the Soviet Union. The author of numerous books and articles, he did research for the Brookings Institute, the National Science Foundation, the Russian Research Center, and other organizations. He was an active member of Haverford Friends Meeting and sat on the boards of the Haverford Friends School and the Baldwin School. He also engaged actively with other local organizations and political groups including the Democratic Party. In 1945 he married Helen Taft Manning, professor of economics at Bryn Mawr College. Dr. Hunter is survived by his children Timothy Hunter, Christine Hunter, and Ann Hunter, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
