1880 census shows his widow Elizabeth Isbell living with their daughter Martha Pullen at Barkers, Floyd County.

No grave marker found. Researchers have been searching for it for several years. He could be buried at Shiloh Cemetery in Polk County near the Alabama state line where his brothers, nephews and nieces and their families are buried.

His widowed mother Mary Polly Rowan Isbell lived and died in DeKalb County/Jackson County, Alabama.
His son Elisha Lee Isbell died in Blount County, Alabama.
James Isbell's grandson Avery A. Pullen, son of Martha J. Isbell Pullen, died at Mentone, DeKalb County, Alabama.
