Michael Anthony “Spike” Westmoreland, age 58, formerly of the Dog Creek Community in Santa Fe and a resident of Columbia, passed away after a courageous battle of cancer on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at his residence.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 13th at 2pm in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Keith Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Byrd Cemetery in the Dog Creek Community. The family will visit with friends on Saturday from 5-8pm at the funeral home and again one hour prior to the service on Sunday. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge and assisting the family with arrangements.
Michael was born on August 10, 1957 and was a native of Santa Fe. He attended Santa Fe High School and became a truck driver at an early age of 18. He was of the Nazarene faith and attended the Elmore Church of Nazarene. He was most recently employed by RTR Transportation Company and was a former employee of General Trucking Company, Blue Springs Rock, and Baker Homes. He loved his family very much and especially enjoyed hanging out with all the guys at Chevy White’s Auto Sales. Spike never met a stranger and was always good for a prank or joke. He loved country music and loved everybody.
Michael is survived by his sons: Brian Westmoreland of Columbia and John Michael Westmoreland of Fayetteville; daughter: Christy Harvey of Columbia; sister: Kim Westmoreland Smyser of Santa Fe; step mother Sue (Eddie Ray) Stanfill of Santa Fe; grandchildren: Carson Westmoreland, Cameron Harvey, and Marissa Cox; niece: Kayla (Jerry) Wright; and the mother of his children: Pam Dawson and Jennifer O’Tinger; best friend: Keith Baker; several aunts, uncles, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents: William Ennis “Dibble” Westmoreland and Minnie Lou Harris Westmoreland; sister: Sheila Westmoreland; Grandparents: Terry and Emily Westmoreland, Sam and Nora Harris.
Pallbearers will be Chevy White, Tommy Westmoreland, Larry Morton, Gerry Cornelius, Terry Bradley, Jeremy Baker, Billy Joe Morton, and Bubba Waller.
Honorary pallbearers will be his friends of the Water Valley Community and the Water Valley Dancers, his many first cousins, co-workers of RTR Transportation Company, former co-workers of Baker Homes, and his many friends at Kathy’s restaurant and Bucky’s Restaurant.
