WILLIAM HOUGH AND TWO WIVES OF PA, VA, OH, & IN

William HOUGH (23 July 1754 Bucks Co, PA - 29 Oct 1838 Highland Co, OH)
seems by circumstantial evidence to be son of William and Sarah (BLAKER)
HOUGH of PA and Loudoun Co, VA. Both William HOUGH, Sr and his son William
HOUGH were condemned in the Quaker Buckingham Monthly Meeting of Bucks Co,
PA, on 7 Apr 1773 for taking part in a lottery. William HOUGH, Sr, left the
area by 4 Sep 1775, but he owed money. He was disowned by 1777 for not
returning and paying his debts. Earlier in 1775, William HOUGH, believed to
be William HOUGH, Jr, of Bucks Co, PA, md on 22 June 1775 Rachel BEANS of
NJ. This young couple apparently joined in the move to Loudoun Co, VA. In
1777, William HOUGH, Jr, admitted at the Quaker Fairfax Monthly Meeting that
he had md out of unity. The wife was not named, but it is assumed that it
was Rachel BEANS. William HOUGH was apparently dismissed and not reinstated
by the Quakers, though he lived in Quaker communities the remainder of his
life.

William joined the Rev. War forces and served as orderly sergeant in Capt.
Adam Vinsell's Comp., Col George West's VA Regt from 21 Aug 1779 or 1780 at
Leesburg, Loudoun Co, VA until 24 Dec 1780. During this service, his company
marched from Loudoun Co to Chesterfield near Richmond, so it is probable
that this service was for only five months. He also served in Capt John
Luckett's Comp, Col West's Regt from 1 Sep 1781 for two months. He stated he
was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. He returned to
Loudoun Co, VA, where he lived at Leesburg until 1808, when he moved to
Highland Co, OH. He lived there until Aug 1830, when he moved to Warren Co,
IN. He received pension #8724 in IN. He later returned to Highland Co, OH,
to be near his sons Ashford and Paton. On 28 Jan 1836 he requested his
pension be sent to Highland Co, OH, as he was very old and infirm and wanted
to be in that county near his sons Paton and Ashford so they could take care
of him. He received pension #26727 in OH. His son Paton HOUGH helped him
with pension records as a local Justice of the Peace. No other relatives are
mentioned in the pension records. There was no widow's pension awarded after
his death. It seems that William HOUGH was last paid on 4 Sep 1837. On 8 Apr
1834, he lived in IN, but he could not prove he had been a Sergeant during
his Rev. War service, so he accepted a private's pension. He made his mark X
for his signature.

Four children are known; but only one is believed to be a child of Rachel
BEANS, the first wife.

1. Joseph (26 Feb 1777 Loudoun Co, VA - 21 Nov 1844 Shelby Co, IN) served in
the War of 1812 from OH. On 7 Apr 1803 at Chillicothe, Ross Co, OH, he had
md Hannah FINDLEY (4 Dec 1789 Salisbury, Mecklenberg Co, NC - 2 Dec 1877
Fremont, Mahaska Co, IA), dau of Rev. Robert Wilkes and Rebecca (BRADLEY)
FINDLEY. They lived in OH and IN and ch incl William Findley; Mariah Scott;
Elizabeth; Rebecca Bradley; Robert W.; Nancy Ann; Zemeriah Blake; Sarah;
James Alexander; Calvin R.; Samuel A.; Eleanor Jane; Elvirah Elizabeth; and
possibly Nathaniel, who lived near the family. Hannah HOUGH received WC
562004 as a surviving widow of the War of 1812. Descendants of this family
claim Rachel BEANS as their ancestor.

The evidence is firm that William md a second time; based on the following:
(1) Rachel was md in June, 1775; and it is nearly biologically impossible
for a woman to have had a child in 1806 31 years after her marriage: (2) the
person listed with Ashford HOUGH in 1830 as probable mother was ten years
younger than the person listed as probable father, William HOUGH: and (3)
the surviving son in 1880, William HOUGH, gave the correct birth state of
his father as PA; and it is assumed he also gave the correct birth state of
his mother as VA. This could not be Rachel BEANS, who was born either in NJ
or PA. Therefore we assume that William HOUGH, the Rev. Soldier, lost his
first wife, believed to have been Rachel BEANS, and remarried at least once,
one wife being a woman born in VA between 1760 and 1770, name not known.
This wife was certainly the mother of the last child William, and probably
the mother of Ashford and Paten. Family tradition as recorded in Goodspeed's
History of Laclede County, MO states that the mother of Ashford and Paten
came to MO and died there in 1843. (A possible contradiction to this
tradition is the fact that no widow's pension application was found for any
woman after William died.) Joseph was born in 1777, and no other ch are
known until about 15 years later when Paten was born. There could have been
several children not now known, or even another marriage in that time span.

2. Paten (c 1791/93 Loudoun Co, VA - April 1874 Laclede Co, MO) served in
the War of 1812 and received bounty land and Pension #13346. On 5 Apr 1815
in Highland Co, OH, he md Sophia MOWERY (1793 VA - 20 Aug 1873 Laclede Co,
MO), dau of Leonard and Elizabeth ( ) MOWERY. They lived in Highland Co, OH
and Laclede Co, MO. They are said to have had 21 ch, but only 4 are known
for sure: Josephus; John; Ashford; and David F. A possible fifth son was
Carey.

3. Ashford (c 1793 Loudoun Co, VA - June 1859 Erath Co, TX) on 10 Feb 1817
in Highland Co, OH, md Elizabeth BADGELEY (1801 KY - ), dau of Andrew
BADGELEY. They lived in Highland Co, OH, then Laclede Co, MO; then they
settled with other families from Laclede Co in Erath Co, TX. Ch incl Paton;
Matilda; Henry R.; Nancy Ann; and probably others. An older couple, believed
to be William and his wife, were with this family in 1830 in Highland Co,
OH.

4. William (16 Mar 1806 Loudoun Co, VA - after 1889 Laclede Co, MO) was born
to parents from PA and VA. He md Margery LONG ( 1806 OH - 1856/57 prob. in
Erath Co, TX). They started their family in Highland Co, OH, but moved to
Laclede Co, MO, thence to Erath Co, TX. One child is known to be William,
and there may have been another named Carey. Other names are not known.
William returned to MO apparently after his wife died and md (2) Mrs.
Harriet (STROOP) LAXTON (1835 MO - ), widow of Jefferson LAXTON. She and
William had ch to incl Givens; Irvin; Albert; Paton A.; Marion; and Jane.

William HOUGH, the Rev. Soldier probably had other ch whose names have not
been recovered. It seems likely that he had daus as well as sons.
