"Nelson Gilbert was born in New York, June 21, 1839 and departed this life April 25, 1921, therefore being at the time of his death 81 years, 10 months and 4 days old. He had been in failing health for the past few months. Death was due to a general break down and old age. He moved when a child with his parents from New York to Illinois, and there grew to manhood. In the year 1863 on Oct. 27, he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Grimes of Woodstock, Ill., after which they came to Delaware county, Iowa, to make their future home. He enlisted for service for his county as a member of Co. K., fifth Iowa Volunteer Infantry. After several months he was honorably discharged on account of illness returning home he began farming in Richland Township. After 16 years of active work he removed to Dundee in 1902. He was appointed post master of Dundee ably discharging his duties for about 12 years. About 6 years ago he gave up the work and has since lived a retired life. His aged wife, one son, James L., and two daughters, Mrs. Hettie Goldsborough and Mrs. Flora Davis; two granddaughters, Belva and Iva Davis, all of Dundee, one adopted son, Samuel Gilbert of Pittsburg, Kansas, one brother, Roy, of Melegh, Neb., and Mrs. Mary Smith of Dundee are left to mourn the loss of a kind husband, father and brother. Mr. Gilbert has long been a resident of this community and will be greatly missed as he was a good neighbor always kind to everyone and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. Funeral services were held Thursday in the Wesleyan church conducted by Rev. Pease of Lamont, Iowa, taking his text from Job 5, chapter 26 verse. Music was rendered by the Lutheran choir. The floral offerings were beautiful. The Masons and World War soldiers rendered their service which was appreciated. The remains were laid to rest in the Forestville cemetery there to await the resurrection morn."
