Joyce Laverne Burgess, 76, of Royal, Arkansas, went to her eternal home, heaven, to be with her Savior and Lord on Friday, December 4, 2015, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Through it all, her self-assigned pursuit to bring joy to the lives of those around her never ceased. She has now come to the time for which she lived; not the end, but the beginning.

Joyce, daughter of the late Frederick and Bernice Tillman, was born in Royal, Arkansas on November 1, 1939.

She graduated from Lake Hamilton High School, earned a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, and a Master of Science in Food Sciences, both from the University of Arkansas.

In 1961 she married Edward Lee Burgess of Hot Springs, Arkansas. The couple moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Joyce was a Registered Dietician, worked as a Home Economist for the NM power company, taught middle school Home Economics, and Foods and Nutrition at the University of New Mexico. After 25 years in New Mexico, and 10 years in northern California, Joyce and Ed returned to Royal, Arkansas, and the farm where Joyce was born.

Joyce was not only an amazing cook, but a talented seamstress, decorator, and the world’s best party host. However, prevailing above her many accomplishments and abilities was her real passion, sharing God’s Word. A constant student and scholar, she served as the Albuquerque Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) Teaching Leader for 13 years, a Community Bible Study (CBS) Teaching Leader, and led various Women’s Ministries at Hoffmantown Baptist Church. In California she led Women’s Ministries at Walnut Creek Baptist Church. And, most recently, was a member and Women’s Discipleship Bible Teacher at Hot Springs Baptist church. Amidst her final battle, this past fall, she led a group of women on an 8-week study of heaven! Imagine.

Joyce is survived by her husband Edward Burgess, her children, Wesley and wife Kathy of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Shannon Denison and husband Scott, of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren Samantha, Joel and Hannah Burgess; sisters Patsy Rowton and Carolyn Henry, both of Royal, Arkansas; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Life Celebration service will be 10:00 am Tuesday at Hot Springs Baptist Church with Bro. Manley Beasley and Bro. Mike Smith officiating.
