Freeman Pershing "Mickey" Kennon was born 8 March 1919 in Doniphan, Ripley County, Missouri, the son of Thomas and Pearl Freeman Kennon. He grew up with two brothers, Lowell and Homer; two sisters, Syna and Thelma; six half sisters and two half brothers. Mickey attended Donaphan High School and then was employed in the shipyard in Portland, Oregon as a rigger.

Mickey entered the Anny 11 August 1944 and received his basic training at Camp Robinson, Arkansas. He was then transferred to Fort Meade, Maryland and then to Fort Ord, California. He served with the 7th Calvary and they were sent to the Philippine Islands. On Luzon he faced one on one combat with the enemy and was hit in the leg by shrapnel, but was lucky enough to be picked up by a small plane that took him to a hospital in Manila For this injury, he was awarded the Purple Heart. After three months, he returned to his company and remained in the Philippine Islands until the end of the war. After the Peace Treaty was signed, they were sent to Japan with the Occupation Troops. He was stationed in Tokyo until he was returned to the States for his discharge 6 February 1946.

Mickey married Betty Eason and they had two sons, Tillman and Steve, and three daughters, Darlene, Marsha and Michele. He was a Construction Contractor in Cross County until poor health forced his retirement. His hobbies have been turkey hunting, deer hunting and going to car races.


Freeman Pershing Kennon died 21 January 2001 and was buried in Lewis Cemetery, near Hickory Ridge, Arkansas.
