LEWISVILLE - Funeral services for Philip C. Gronewold, 90, of Lewisville, Minn., will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Lewisville, Military honors at the church will be with the American Legion Post 561 of Lewisville. Interment with full military honors will be held at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minn.

Philip died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at the Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas.

Philip Charles Gronewold was born Oct. 25, 1925, in Madelia, Minn., to George and Cora (Halvorson) Gronewold. He was baptized at a rural Linden church in 1929 and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church of Lewisville in 1939. Philip attended schools at Lewisville Dist. 55 and graduated from Madelia High School. Phil then attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis for electrical training. He served in WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corp in Panama.

On Sept. 11, 1949, Philip was united in marriage to Amelia Mae Eads in Alvon, W. Va. Philip farmed his entire life in the Lewisville area until retiring in 1988. Philip was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Lewisville, a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1648 in New Ulm, a member of the American Legion Post 561 in Lewisville and the U.S. Air Force Sgt. Association. In 1953, he built his own amateur radio station.

Philip went moose and bear hunting in Alaska in 1984 and salmon and halibut fishing in 1990. Philip and Amelia spent their winters in San Juan, Texas.

Philip is survived by his wife of 67 years, Amelia of Lewisville; two daughters, Jeanne (Bevan) Burroughs of Pflugerville, Texas, Wendy Gjerde of Lafayette, Minn.; two sons, Kerry (Linda) Gronewold of Fairbanks, Alaska, Larry (Peggy) Gronewold of Altavista, Va.; 13 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; one sister, Kay (Richard) Gillespie of Madelia, Minn.; one brother, Gerald Gronewold of Lewisville, Minn.; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Chet; three grandchildren; and one brother.
