Peter J. “P.J.” Cummings, 81, Atchison, Kansas died Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, MO.

P.J. was born on June 24, 1934 in Atchison, Kansas, the son of John W. and Eva Petesch Cummings. He attended the Union Elementary School and graduated from the Nortonville High School.

He and the former Ramona M. Lee were united in marriage on August 2, 1955 at St. Patrick’s Church in Atchison, Kansas. They recently celebrated sixty years of marriage. He and his wife, Ramona were former recipients of the Fidelis Award from the League of St. Maur.

A farmer and stockman all of his adult life, P.J. also served as a purchasing agent for fifteen years at the Kansas State Penitentiary in Lansing, Kansas and for five years served with the Kansas Department of Transportation until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Benedict Parish, participating at St. Patrick’s Church south of Atchison and served on the church council. For over fifty years he was active in 4-H leadership and the organization honored his family as the 4-H Family of the Year; served on the Potter School Board; and was a longtime democrat precinct committeeman for Walnut Township; a member of the Platte County Steam and Gas Club and the 2-Cylinder Club of greater Kansas City. P.J. was the original incorporator of the Valley State Bank in Atchison and founded the Mark Plaza Bank in Overland Park, Kansas and served on the board of directors of First National Bank of Nortonville, Kansas. He enjoyed collecting and restoring antique tractors and farm equipment for many years. P.J. participated in numerous benefit “tractor rides” and during the last year he was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as having been in the longest organized ride. He was a member of the Elk’s Club.

P.J. is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ramona Cummings, sons, Alan (Susan) Cummings, Atchison, KS, Kevin (Lisa) Cummings, Olathe, KS, daughters, Karen (Ron) Bell, Atchison, KS, Brenda (Paul) Levinsky, Pottersville, NJ, Sandy Sampson, Parkville, MO, Lisa Hamrick, Roeland Park, KS, seventeen grandchildren, two step-granchildren, six great grandchildren, and five step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter Anne Levinsky and a brother Leo Cummings.

Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, December 11, 2015 at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick’s Church with Abbot Barnabas Senecal, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
