SOUTHARD, JOHN B. JR., 61, of Middletown, KY, long-time attorney and civil servant, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2008 at Rockford Manor.

John grew up in Middletown where he attended Eastern High School, then attended the University of Kentucky and earned his J. D. law degree from the University of Louisville in 1972. Upon graduation from law school, John entered the Judge Advocate General Corps of the Air Force and served during the Vietnam War. He taught trial practice, constitutional law and criminal law at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama, and finally the Kentucky Air National Guard, where he retired in 2003 at the rank of Colonel. He also represented Middletown as its City Attorney from 1980 to 1988 and as City Commissioner from 1990 to 1996. He taught constitutional, criminal law and criminal procedure and evidence at the University of Louisville's School of Justice Administration and maintained a private law practice in Middletown. John was a member of Middletown Methodist Church; he served as president of the Middletown Rotary Club. John acted as league commissioner for the Middletown Recreation Association T-Ball, mini-basketball and softball programs. He served the Boy Scouts of America as Cub Master and Scoutmaster.

John is preceded in death by his father, John Blackburn Southard Sr. and grandparents.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Gayle Bryant Southard; sons, John Willard, Rob, and Joseph; daughter-in-law, Jill Evenski and expected grandchild, Emma; mother, Dorothy Wolfe Southard; sister, Betty Southard Stokes; and nieces, Leslie and Amy Stokes.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Rockford Manor Nursing home for the excellent care he received.

His funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at noon at the Pearson-Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Road and burial will follow in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy should be sent to the Alzheimer's Association.
