Catherine Stephens was probably born about 1849 in the present day area of Isham in Scott Co. (then part of Campbell Co.), Tennessee, close to the KY/TN state line. Scott County was not created until December of 1849.

Catherine was the daughter of Whitmill Stephens (1809-abt 1866) and Elizabeth Waters (abt 1807-bet 1871/80)), the sixth of their six known children.

Catherine appears in the 1860 US Census but does not appear in any censuses thereafter. It is thought that she died as a young teenager in the early-mid 1860s and was buried on the Stephens family farm. She would have been one of the earliest burials, if not the earliest. in what is now called the Stephens Cemetery.

It is possible that her grave marker is one of the existing but unreadable headstones or field stones. More likely Catherine's marker was a field stone that was mistakenly removed several years ago when the cemetery received a much needed clean-up. It is known that during that clean-up several fields tones were removed by an individual not knowing that they were actually early grave markers.
