Benjamin Franklin Matthews, 86, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2015 in a local hospital. Services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Grace Fellowship, 910 Cypress in Abilene with Bruce Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home of Merkel. A visitation will be 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ben was born November 19, 1929 in Abilene to Frank Lowden and Iler Mae (Brock) Matthews. He married Frankie Pearl Turner November 1970. Ben was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. After serving in the Navy he returned to Abilene and worked for Magcobar Mud Company. He loved to fish, collect toys and was an avid gardner. Being a man of few words, Ben loved to read and could fix anything .

Survivors include his wife, Frankie Matthews of Abilene,a daughter Joetta Conklin and husband Greg of Watkins Glen, NY, two sisters, Margaret Adair of Abilene, Nancy Taylor of Marble Falls, a brother, Jimmy Matthews of Abilene,four grandchildren, Doug and Bridgette Brown of Las Vegas, NV, Edward and Michele Cannon of Strawberry, AZ, Bobbie Jo Brown and partner Norma Vasquez of Amarillo, Sherry Martin and finance' Mark Rynders of Abilene, four great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. Ben was preceded in death by a son Calvin Matthews, a step daughter, Ruth Martin Gill and four brothers.
