WILLIAM E. POLK DIES AFTER SHORT ILLNESS - Served As Millington Mayor From 1907 To 1919 - William Eddings Polk, former mayor of Millington and resident of Memphis for 20 years, died at 8:30 o'clock last night at his home at 1742 North Parkway following a two week illness. He was 83. Mr. Polk, born near Raleigh, had been a resident of Shelby County all his life. He had been in poor health the last three years. Mr. Polk was mayor of Millington from 1907 to 1919 when he retired and moved to Memphis. He was a Mason for more than 50 years and was a charter member of the Millington Baptist Church. He and Mrs. Polk had been married 61 years. Until ill health prevented, Mr. Polk cultivated a rose garden at his home. Besides his wife, Mrs. Lena E. Polk, he leaves two sons, Dr. L.R. Polk and Dr. C.W. Polk, both of Memphis, and a daughter, Mrs. E.P. Smith of Marshall, Texas. Services will be conducted at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the National Funeral Home by the Rev. C.S. Brown of Millington. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery near Lucy. (Published in The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, TN, on April 13, 1939)
