US Congressman. While attending Miami University of Ohio at the start of the Civil War, he employed his previous militia experience to organize Dodd's University Company, which became Company B, Twentieth Ohio Infantry Regiment. He eventually rose to Lieutenant Colonel and Commander of the First Alabama Union Cavalry Regiment. After the war he received his degree from Miami University, attended Cincinnati Law School and became an attorney. Dodds served in the Ohio House from 1870 to 1871. In 1872 he was elected to the US House as a Democrat to fill the vacancy caused by Aaron F. Perry's resignation, serving from October 1872 to March 1873. He was not a candidate for reelection in 1872 and returned to his Cincinnati law practice. Dodds Hall at Miami University is named for him.
