BILLERICA - Bartholomew J. Scannell, Sr., a widely known retired industrialist and father of a prominent Greater-Lowell family, died yesterday afternoon at a Billerica nursing home.

Born in Fitchburg, a son of the late Bartholomew J. and the late Mary A. (Wholey) Scannell, he came to this city almost nine decades ago and was affiliated with the boiler making and steel industries for over three quarters of a century. He served as president of the Scannell Boiler Works and the Lowell Iron and Steel Company until his retirement in 1959.

He formerly made his home on Parkview avenue in Lowell, but since his retirement had established residence in Cambridge, before returning to Greater-Lowell about five years ago.

He was married the late Geneva (Baldwin) Scannell, who died in 1960, and is survived by two sons, Bartholomew J. Scannell, Jr., president of the Lowell Iron and Steel Company, and Joseph Scannell of Chelmsford, president-treasurer of the Fairgrieve Company, Inc., of Lowell; a daughter, Mrs. Oscar E. (Louise) Beckvold, Jr. of Ridgewood, N.J.,; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Miss Kathryn Scannell and Miss Mary Scannell, both of Lowell, and two brothers, Albert T. Scannell of Chicago, Ill., and Philip L. Scannell Sr. of Lowell.
