Sarah 'Maxine' Looper Billings, age 88, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, formerly of Sparta, passed away in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by her loving family on Sunday December 6 2015.
Maxine was born September 12, 1927 in the Shady Grove Community near Monterey, Tennessee. She was the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Doyle Looper of the Dry Valley Community of Putnam County. One brother, Deloy Looper preceded her in death. They moved to Detroit, Michigan when she was 16. She married the late Orvin Billings in 1946. They lived in Michigan 12 years.
In 1958 they moved back to Tennessee, to the Cassville Community in White County where they spent most of their lives. Maxine worked at the Smithville Shirt Factory from 1958 until 1960. In January of 1961 they purchased the Cassville Food Market. She operated the store until 1975. Maxine was a very kind and giving person and will be remembered by all the children she gave candy and the many families she helped during those years. For a time, she worked at the Factory Outlet in Sparta. After that, she helped Orvin on the farm raising cattle until he became ill in 1998.
She was a loving Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great Great Grandmother and will be so missed
Maxine and Orvin had two daughters.
Sharon (Garry) Green and Deborah Billings. Two granddaughters, Sheryl and Ted Chesnutt; Rachael and Nicholas Ged all of Tennessee. One grandson, Bill (Monica) Green of Kentucky. Seven great grandchildren, one great great grandson, a special nephew, Doyle Van Looper of Tennessee and special niece, Jackie Adampoulos of Kentucky also survive.
Services for Mrs. Billings will be held Thursday, in the chapel of Oak Lawn Funeral Home with Greg Keller and James McGill officiating.
