Ludowici – George M. Smith, Jr., 75, passed away Saturday, December 5, 2015 at his residence under the care of his family and Georgia Hospice Care. He was born in Charleston, SC and lived in Liberty and Long Counties since 1967.

He retired from the U.S. Army as a SGM with 24 years of service receiving the following awards and medals; National Defense Service Medal, 5 Good Conduct medals, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal W 60 Device, 2 Bronze Star Medals, 3 Overseas Service Bars, and Meritorious Service Medal.

After retirement he worked at the Ft. Stewart Commissary for several years. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of Grace Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Frances Teresa Adams, his parents, George Sr. and Mary Smith, and a brother, John Edward Smith.

Survivors are his wife of 52 years, Frances Smith of Ludowici; daughters and son-in-law, Debra Lee of Pine Mountain, GA and Barbara MacDougal (Bernard) of Ludowici; 5 grandchildren, Michael Croft, Jason Baker, Kelly Evans, Corey Hiatt, and Emily Harrelson; 4 great-grandchildren, Keelan Wisham, Kyndel Hiatt, Layla Harrelson, and Harper Hiatt.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 8 at 2 PM at the Howard Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Long and Curtis Mason officiating. Visitation will be from 12 noon until the funeral hour. Active pallbearers will be Bernard MacDougall, Corey Hiatt, Jeff Oliver, Allen Harrelson, Clint Lyons, and David Baxter. Burial with military honors will follow in the Rye Patch Cemetery.
