Robert was a farmer who resided in Knox Co., IL until the late 1870's when he and his family spent a year in Texas. They returned to Fulton, Illinlois. In the 1880's he and his wife, Darthula with their children, Robert "Emmett" and Jennie, began to move westward. In 1885, the family is in Kennesaw, Adams, Nebraska. In 1900, they are residing in Boulder, Colorado, and by 1910, they have reached the west coast and are in Long Beach, California. Darthula died in 1910, but Robert lived on until 1920. Their children remained in California. "Emmett" married Anna Aldrich; he died in San Diego in 1931. Jennie married Elbert Elsworth Norton; they had a daughter, Marguerite Fay Norton(married Dr. Frank Saunders Chambers and had two children: Frank Saunders Chambers, Jr. and Gwendolyn Anne Chambers Lathrop).
As a side note, there is some confusion about Civil War service. This Robert Ground never lived in Arkansas nor served in the CSA. He did enlist for the Union army draft on Jul. 1, 1863 in Knox County, Illinois, but there is no record that he served. The man who served in the CSA in Arkansas under Gordon was Robert Grounds.
