Christine Morrison, 81, Publix

LAKELAND, Fl -- Going out dancing with her friends was a longtime hobby of Mrs. Christine Elizabeth Morrison.

"She liked the jitterbug. She had a big group of friends. They went here and there to different Elks Clubs and Moose Clubs," said her son, Randy Morrison of Lakeland. "She loved to dance -- 81 years old and still doing the jitterbug. That is pretty good. In fact, she was going dancing the day she had the heart attack."

The retired secretary for Publix Super Markets died of heart disease Wednesday (Aug. 23, 2006) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 81.

Born in Lakeland on March 19, 1925, she graduated from Kathleen High School. After marrying Filmore Morrison, the couple moved to Dayton, Texas, where they resided until his death in 1967. Mrs. Morrison returned to the area from there and began her 20-year career with Publix Super Markets, working as a secretary for the grocery warehouse and the frozen food warehouse until her retirement.

She was described as a hard-working, independent woman who maintained an active lifestyle and close relationship with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who called her "Nana."

"She never said a bad word about anybody. She was just one of a kind, in my opinion, and she loved to help people," Randy Morrison said.

She was a member of the American Legion in Lakeland. She was a Baptist.

In addition to her son, Randy Morrison, she is survived by her son, Phil Morrison, Libby, Mont.; sisters, Dorothy Castles, Betty Jo Morris and Carolyn McClelland, all of Lakeland; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Countryside Funeral Chapel. Services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel.

Burial will be in Fitzgerald Cemetery.
