MUNCIE-Wanda Joan (Conklin) Hale passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Dec. 3, 2015, at the age of 85.
Wanda is survived by her husband of 63 years, William Hale. Also surviving are her son, Mark, and his wife, Julie, and her two grandchildren, Emily and Ryan. Her sister, Barbara Myers, also survives. A special thanks to her niece, Debbie Bullock. She is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Mildred (Sheets) Conklin, and her brother, Richard Conklin.
Wanda was born on Oct. 1, 1930, in Muncie. She graduated from Daleville High School in 1948. She earned her bachelor's degree from Ball State Teachers College in 1952 and master's degree in 1960. Wanda and Bill were married Aug. 15, 1954, at the Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Muncie.
Wanda taught elementary school in Pendleton, Chesterfield and the majority of her 40-plus-year career in Daleville. One of her great joys in teaching second grade was assigning the students a handwritten theme of "What do I want to be." Wanda would keep those themes and 10 years later hand them to the students at the conclusion of their graduation ceremony.
Wanda had a passion for teaching as well as a dedication to the profession. She served as an active member of the Daleville Teachers Union as well as the union negotiation committee.
Wanda and Bill traveled during their retirement and had many stories to tell. Many of those stories were with their good friends affectionately known as The Tacky Tour Group. They enjoyed the many cruises with the Tacky Tour as well as the weekends at the lake. They enjoyed their work with the Lion's Sight Savors Mission while traveling to many different countries. Their favorites were Africa and Guatemala.
One of Wanda's greatest joys in later years was attending Emily's volleyball games and Ryan's baseball and basketball games. She rarely missed a game.
Calling hours are Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Elm Ridge Funeral Home. A funeral is scheduled at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
