The Rev. Wilbur Eli Beers – the (Oil City, Pa) Derrick March 11, 1964

FRANKLIN - Services for the Rev. Wilbur Eli Beers, of Houghton, N.Y., who died Monday morning in the Veterans Hospital, Buffalo, will be conducted Thursday at 2:30 p. m. in the Wesleyan Methodist Church. He entered the hospital Feb. 19.

Mr. Beers was born in Franklin, July 28 1920, the son of William Grover and Anna (Beer) Beers. He graduated from Rocky Grove High School in 1938 and attended Houghton College. Houghton, New York, for four years.

He married the former Mary E. Douglas, June 23, 1942, in Oil City.

He was a veteran of World War II and served as a private first class with Battery B 397, Anti-Aircraft Artillery, Automatic Weapons Battalion. He was inducted in the service Sept. 23, 1942 in Erie and was discharged Oct. 17, 1945 at Indiantown Gap. He served in France, central Europe and the Rhineland and was awarded the Bronze Star for hero achievement in France. He also received the Good Conduct, European, African and Middle Eastern service medals.

While in Rocky Grove High School he was a member of the baseball team coached by G. Reed Pierce. He was also active in community Softball. Mr. Beers was an ardent hunter, fisherman and trapper. The Rev. Beers was pastor at the Wesleyan Methodist Rich Valley Church, Emporium, for four years. For the past years he served as pastor of the East Leon Wesleyan Methodist Church at Cattaraugus, N. Y.

Surviving in addition to his parents in Rocky Grove are his wife and the following children: Marlene L., Wilbur E. Jr., Gary L., Denise J. and Kathleen M. Beers, all at home. Also surviving are two brothers, William G. Beers Jr., of Holly, Mich., and John R. Beers, of Struthers, O.; and three sisters, Mrs. Blair (Esther) Kightlinger, Stow, 0hio, Mrs. James (Vergena) Ritchey, Cooperstown, and Mrs. James (Leola) Neeley, Franklin.

The family will receive friends the Burger Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m. today. The body will be removed to the Wesleyan Methodist Church, at 1:30 p. m. Thursday for viewing. The Rev. Daniel Heinz, president of Lockport Conference, Houghton, N. Y., will officiate at the service, assisted by the Rev. Marvin McDuffee, pastor of the East Leon Wesleyan Methodist Church and the Rev. B. C. Pollock, pastor of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Interment will be made in the Franklin Cemetery.
