Wilma Aileen McHan Ashe, 90, of Bryson City, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, in a Swain County care center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, at Bryson City United Methodist Church. The Rev. David Russell officiated. Burial followed in the Whittier Cemetery.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Swain County and daughter of the late Noah Robert and Eva Summerow McHan. She was a member of Bryson City United Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher and youth choir director. She was employed for 24 years as the food service manager for Carson-Newman College, Lees-McRae College and UNC-Greensboro. She was the last surviving charter member of Western North Carolina Associated Communities and was active in Swain County politics.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Reid Ashe; two brothers, Vernon and Glen McHan; and one sister, Madge Ramsey.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Maupin of Dandridge, Tenn., and Donna Walters of Lawrenceville, Ga.; three grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
