James Butler, Lord Deputy of Ireland, Lord of the Manor of Advowson of Callan, was the son of Edmund Butler, The MacRichard of Ossory, KG (1420-1464) and Catherine O'Carroll, Princess of Elie (1415-1506). He married Sabh Kavanagh, Princess of Leinster (1458-1492) on 14 April 1474 and they had six children.
