One of thirteen children, Giovanni Ceirano was a native of Lagnasco. Ordained priest there on July 1, 1951, he was sent to Rome to further his studies at the Pontifical Lateran University, earning a doctorate in utroque iure, both in canon and civil laws, and at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy. Joining the diplomatic service of the Holy See, he was named adjunct of the apostolic nunciature in La Paz, Bolivia, and successively secretary of the nunciature in Haiti in 1959, Austria between 1960 and 1964, Scandinavia from 1964 until 1965, and Algeria between 1965 and 1971. Called to Rome in the latter year to serve as counselor for reports with states in the office of Msgr. Agostino Casaroli, in 1974 he was named assistant in the apostolic delegation of Jerusalem. Serving in Bonn and Vienna, he was named permanent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations and to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Pope John Paul II elected him archbishop of the titular see of Tagase and appointed him pro-nuncio in Papua New Guinea on December 21, 1989, receiving his episcopal consecration from the Pontiff himself on January 6 of the following year, appointing him pro-nuncio in the Solomon Islands nine days later. Named apostolic nuncio in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden on August 20, 1992, he resigned from office on February 27, 1999, retiring to his native Lagnasco, where he passed unexpectedly away on January 30, 2006 at 78 years of age
