Marita Smith of Eau Claire, WI, formerly of Stanley, passed away on November 22, 2015 at Oakbrook Rehabilitation in Thorp, WI.

Marita was born in Stanley, WI to John and Mary Wisocky, the youngest daughter of seven children. She attended and graduated from Stanley Schools. She also graduated from River Falls State University, WI. She attended UWEC, UW-Madison and Stout. She was a teacher by profession and also held a degree in Library Science.

She joined the U.S. Women's Army Corps in 1943 and served her country in WWII and Korea. While in the service she was in France, Germany and Italy. She spent two years registering GIs in the POW camp in North Carolina. Marita completed her military service as a TEC 4 with the Women’s Army Corps of the US Army in 1946.

On June 25, 1946 she married Daniel W. Smith, who passed away January 1, 1969.

She worked for the UW Extension Division and in 1965 she began working for Eau Claire County as a secretary for the Veterans Service Office. In 1971 she was appointed as the County Veterans Service Officer. She was the first female to hold the position of State Veterans Service Officer in Eau Claire County and the state of Wisconsin. She held that position until retiring in 2000.

Marita was the first female to be the President of Wisconsin County Veterans Service Officers Association. She was a former President of the Eau Claire American Legion Auxiliary. Marita was also a member of many other organizations throughout the Eau Claire area.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Sophie Wisocky, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews as well as many friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Daniel Smith; 2 brothers, 4 sisters and many friends.

A Mass of a Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 7th, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Stanley, WI with Father William Felix officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday, December 6th, 2015 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel and beginning at 10:00 a.m. prior to funeral Mass on Monday at the church. Burial will follow services at Holy Family Catholic Cemetery with full Military Honors being performed by the American Legion Post 53 of Eau Claire.

Marita received many awards and certificates for her dedication to various organizations throughout WI, the US Government, and the VA. She was known by many for her compassion and willingness to assist all. Thank you for your service to your county and fellow Veterans, God Bless you. Marita, we love you.
