Archer Leo Sackett, 52, a resident of Gray’s Court, Hills Flat, died early yesterday morning at the county hospital, where he was taken July 1, following serious illness.
Little is known here of the deceased man or his background.
The body was taken in charge by the Holmes Funeral Home, and efforts are now being made to locate relatives and arrange interment.
Dr. Mark Pike will officiate at the services in memory of the late Archer Leo Sackett at the Holmes Funeral Home at 10 o’clock this morning. Sackett, a Hills Flaty resident, died earlier in the week at the Nevada County Hospital. The burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

(* CADI give birthyear of 1880. I believe this is incorrect. I believe 1878 to be the correct date. I even believe the obit should have said 62 and not 52. I have researched most everyone in the block of this cemetery, and I see errors such as these frequently. This is the Pauper Section.
I have created a vicinity marker for Mr. Sackett. I will use the 1878 date. Anyone who has any facts, I welcome to contact me..... Deanna)

Suggested edit: I am not related to this individual, but I am a member of The Sackett Family Association, which researched all Sackett/Sacket lines. For the information we have so far, see , summarized below.

Archer Leo Sackett probably was born 5 Nov 1878 in Colusa County, California. The 1880 census suggests that his parents are Reuben S. (b. 1843 in Channahan, Will County, Illinois), based on other records, a blacksmith, and Caroline A. Sackett. Caroline’s 1942 obituary indicates that she migrated to California in about 1877. In most records prior to 1920 Archer is listed as Archie L Sackett.

However, there are several threads or evidence that suggests that Archie’s real father was not Reuben Sackett. First, Reuben and “Mrs. Caroline A. White” were married 18 Sep 1879 in Colusa, Colusa County, California. Archie is listed as being 1 year old in the 1880 census (enumerated June 4), living with his parents in the village of Maxwell in Colusa County; if he was at least one year old on June 4, then he was born before Reuben and Caroline’s marriage.

Next, the 1900 census indicates that Archie was born in Nov 1878, which also is prior to the marriage of Reuben and Caroline. In 1900, Caroline (listed as Carrie A. Sackett) is widowed and living in Meadow Lake Township in Nevada County, California, with Archie (age 22) and daughters “Carlista M.” (age 20) and Etta A. (age 14). [Reuben Sackett registered to vote on 12 Aug 1890 in Colusa, California. On 27 Oct 1892, he registered to vote in Truckee, California, listing his occupation as engineer. That is the last record that has so far been found for him.]

Yet another line of evidence is that Caroline’s death record indicates that her maiden name is Wood, as do the death records of her two daughters, Calista and Etta. Caroline’s obituary indicates that she was born in Long Eddy (Sullivan County), New York on 15 Dec 1858. However, various census records report her birth place as New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana with ages suggesting a birth year of 1855 through 1858. No Caroline or Carrie A. Wood or Woods was listed in the 1855-1875 census records as living in Sullivan County, New York, and I have not located a marriage record for her and a Mr. White.

The final line of evidence is the curious way that Archie is listed in the 1920 census. His wife is identified as Maude L White, and Archie is listed with two surnames, White and Sackett, with a big circle around both of his surnames. A note in the margin of the census indicates that White is his legal surname but that he has been known as Sackett.

On 11 Feb 1907, Archie married Maude Leila White in Los Angeles, California. The two of them are listed as living at various addresses in Sacramento in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses, as well as in Archie’s WW I draft registration (which, incidentally says Archie was born 5 Nov 1877) and some city directories, the latest being published in 1932. Collectively these records indicate that Maude (sometimes spelled Maud) was born about 1876 in Ohio. Although no state or local death record has yet been found, Find A Grave memorial 59041703 for Maud Sackett gives a death date of 1 Dec 1932, buried in Odd Fellows Lawn Cemetery in Sacramento. This probably is the grave of Archie’s wife.

Family probably drew Archie back to Nevada County after Maude’s death. In 1900, his mother was living in Meadow Lake Township, Nevada County. In 1930, she was living in Truckee, Meadow Lake Township, Nevada County. I have not yet found any record of her location in 1910 and 1920, but these records suggest that she may still have been living in the same area for decades. The 1940 census has her living in Colfax, Placer County, with her daughter and son-in-law, Etta and John B. McCleary, also indicating that she was living in rural Nevada County in 1935. [The McCleary family also was living in Colfax in the 1920 and 1930 censuses.] Caroline Augusta Sackett died 14 Oct 1942 near Colfax. Her obituary suggests that she was buried near Truckee, but no cemetery was identified in her obituary, and I have not ordered a copy of her official death certificate.
