SCRIPPS , JOHN NICHOLAS Age 92, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, of Grand Rapids, went to be with his blessed Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 after a prolonged illness. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

John 's training was in music, both at Bob Jones University and at the University of Michigan. He was a very talented trumpet player and loved instrumental music, both as a player and dedicated teacher. He taught both at Bob Jones and later in several of the Grand Rapids area Christian Schools. He was beloved for continuing to mentor many of his students long after they left his classes, and was sought out as a private teacher.

He was the original founder and owner of Christian Music Center, now continuing as Meyer Music. He founded the Jubal Brass ensemble, and played in and directed it for many years. Over his lifetime, he played in many other Grand Rapids groups, including the Grand Rapids Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphonic Band, and in retirement, with the Bretonaires. John had a terrific sense of adventure, and his children remember wonderful vacations, from tent camping trips in Canada and the South, where he read to all the kids around the campfire, to a memorable car trip around Europe with all four kids, back in 1964. John was very active, a jogger, tennis player, cyclist, avid golfer, and still exercised regularly, even up until a week before his death. At age 68, after retirement, he biked across the United States with Wandering Wheels. John was very active in the leadership of area churches, Calvary Church, Twelfth Avenue CRC, Cascade Fellowship CRC, Calvin CRC in Muskegon, and was a member at Brookside CRC where he played his trumpet until just a few years ago. John actively participated in Crossroad Ministries, a faith based writing ministry to prisoners. In his final years, he wrote his memoirs, a great gift to his children, grandchildren and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 27, 2015, 2:00 PM, at Brookside Christian Reformed Church, 3600 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, with Rev. Paul DeVries officiating. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, April 26, at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St. SE, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brookside CRC Benevolence Fund or to Faith Hospice Patient Assistance Fund.
