John Montgomery Crebs

US Congressman. He moved to Illinois with his parents in 1837 and became a lawyer in 1852. He served in the Army during the Civil War, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and commanding Infantry and Cavalry units in camapigns throughout the South. After the war he resumed his Illinois law practice. In 1868 Crebs was elected as a Democrat to the US House of Representatives and was reelected in 1870, serving from 1869 to 1873. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1872, after which he again returned to his law practice.
