Rufus Horatio Jefferson was born in Naperville, Illinois, on March 6, 1840.

He heard that his brother, Ernest, had enlisted and walked to Fort Snelling to be with his brother. That was a distance of some 150 miles. He arrived just as the troops were leaving to go out east. He jumped on the train carrying the regiment, though he had no uniform, training or gun. He was mustered in at Centerville, Maryland the night before the battle of Bull Run.

He was slightly wounded in the battle. Fifty years later the Government sent a check to him for $3.33 for pay due him from June 22 to July 1, 1861.

In October 1862, he was one of several men who transferred to serve in the US Cavalry. His cavalry unit fought at Gettysburg. He was not involved on July 2, 1863, but was there on July 3rd.

He took an active interest in the political life of Minnesota, holding many local offices in Cottonwood County.

In 1905 he was elected to the state legislature. He was a member of the G. A. R. and a trustee of the Minnesota Soldier's Home in Minneapolis. He was very active in the First Minnesota Veterans Association and served as an officer several times.

He died in Bingham Lake on August 24, 1932, making him one of the last survivors of the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry.
He was 92 years old.
