Eleanor Charlene Trumbo Meyer was born March 31, 1919 near Murray, Iowa to Harmon P Trumbo and Florence Currier Trumbo. She died at 12:05 a.m. on December 3, 2015 at her home in Chariton, Iowa at the age of 96 years, eight months and three days.

Charlene attended Amity country school through eighth grade and graduated from Chariton High School as valedictorian of the Class of 1936. She studied at Simpson College in Indianola for two years before transferring to Iowa State College, graduating in 1940 with a bachelor of science degree in home economics education. She taught home economics in Lohrville, Iowa from 1940-42, then taught in Chariton, Iowa from 1942-44. In 1944 she returned to Iowa State, where she earned a master of science degree in child development in 1945. Her graduate thesis, “The Assertive Behavior of Children as Related to Parent Behavior,” was published in the Journal of Home Economics in February 1947.

In 1942, while teaching in Chariton, she met a young attorney named Virgil Meyer, who lived in her Grandmother Currier’s rooming house at Auburn and Eighth Street. They started dating while Charlene was studying for her master’s degree at Iowa State and married in Ames, Iowa on September 24, 1945. To this union, five sons were born: Edward Harmon in 1946, Stephen Paul in 1947, James Dennis in 1950, Philip John in 1952 and Raymond Charles in 1958.

While keeping house and caring for her growing family, Charlene worked as a substitute teacher and assisted Virgil in his law practice every tax season for nearly 30 years. She was also active in numerous civic, charitable and social organizations, serving for many years on the Board of Trustees of the Chariton Public Library, as a Trustee of the Lucas County Hospital from 1973 through 1978, as an election official, and as a member of the Sacred Heart Cemetery Board, T.T.T., PEO, Lucky Ladies Investment Club, Chariton Women’s Club and Review A Book Club, among other groups. She and Virgil enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and abroad and, after their retirement, spending winters in Fort Myers Beach, Florida.

Virgil passed away December 25, 1993. Following his death, Charlene continued living in the home they built at 817 Grace Avenue until 2006, when she and her son, Ed, became two of the first residents of Northridge (now Homestead) Assisted Living. It was here she passed away on December 3, 2015 following a brief final illness.

Charlene was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; her parents, Harmon P and Florence Currier Trumbo; her stepmother, Pauline Wilson Trumbo; and her two younger brothers, Robert and Ronald Trumbo.
