Al was born December 6, 1927 in Posey County, Indiana, the son of Leo and Ada (Lopp) Goff. In 1944, when he was 18, he wanted to enlist during World War II, but was blind in one eye. The Merchant Marines accepted him and he was an able-bodied seaman in the South Pacific (south and west of the Hawaiian Islands) on a tanker that refueled battleships, aircraft carriers, cruisers and destroyers while they were underway.

He was honorably discharged in 1947 and became a construction foreman and supervised the building of the first bridge across the Mississippi River in St. Louis, Missouri. He also worked on a half dozen girder bridges, a dam and 68 slip form grain elevators in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and South Dakota.

He married Marilyn Andrist Trelstad March 25, 1969 and they drove truck and farmed together for 46 years. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pine Island. Al loved his family, friends, reading western novels and the outdoors.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyn, brother Kenneth (Blanche), of Manhattan, Kansas, sister-in-law, Sue Goff of Mt. Vernon, Indiana. His children are Jane Harrington of Huntsville, Missouri, Brenda Goff, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, David (Debbie) Goff of Monticello, Iowa, Beverly (Mark) Joslin of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, and stepson, Ronald (Carol) Trelstad of West Concord, Minnesota; also 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Austin Goff and sister, Juanita (June) Duvall.

A memorial will be held at Pine Haven Care Center on Saturday, December 5th at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials can be sent to Pine Haven Care Center or St. Paul's Lutheran Church. His body was donated to the Mayo Clinic.
