Jason Durfee

Residence was not listed; 20 years old.
Enlisted on 5/23/1861 as a Private.
On 5/23/1861 he mustered into "K" Co. MN 1st Infantry
He died a POW (date not stated) at Richmond, VA

Jason Durfee was the middle of three brothers, who served together in the First Minnesota.

He was 20 when he enlisted on May 23, 1861. His brother, Chester, was 18 and George was 22. All three were placed in Company K.

Jason was wounded at Bull Run while returning from the Rebel lines with a captured flag. Jason held on for a month. He died from his wounds on August 25, 1861, while in Libby Prison.
It is believed that Jason was buried in or near the Shockoe Hill Cemetery just north of Richmond, as were the other Union prisoners who died there at that time.

After the war, in 1866-1867, their bodies were removed to the Richmond National Cemetery where they rest today. Though there is no grave that bears his name, he is probably in one of those marked, "Unknown".
