Before 1838 he served in the military in Florida during the Seminole Wars (also known as the Florida Wars).

in 1838 he served in Alabama, during the Indian Wars and Disturbances

During the Mexican American War, he mustered in as Private at age 35 years on 3 Sep 1847, in Dade Co, Georgia. His unit was Capt. Fulton's Company, Calhoun's Mounted Battalion Georgia Volunteers. By 1848, he had been promoted to 1st Sergeant, and had attained Sergeant Major by his mustering out in Mobile, Alabama, on 12 Jul 1848.

Civil War Confederate Soldier, Nov-Dec 1861, Captain Allen Lea's Company. Per his granddaughter, Gloria (Shafer) Seymour he and others in the area were forced to enlist. After a few months got out, was caught and put in prison. Finally got away and joined the Federal forces at Bridgeport, Alabama. (or near there). He then enlisted in the Union Army. His confederate service is verified by NARA M395 compiled military service records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Tennessee.

"Allen Lea actually served in the 1st TN Independent Vidette Cavalry, US rather then the 1st AL Cav. USV., per NARA M395. Compiled military service records of volunteer Union soldiers belonging to units organized for service from the State of Tennessee."
