In 1957, she won the titles of Miss Pereira, Miss Caldas and finished first runner-up in the Miss Colombia National Beauty Pageant. Due to the Miss Universe rules stating that no candidate can be married before the final contest itself, Miss Colombia winner Doris Gil Santamaria was forced to resign, making Zuluaga Miss Colombia by default. At the Miss Universe Pageant at Long Beach, California, on July 25, 1958, Luz Marina Zuluaga was crowned Colombia’s Miss Universe. A Colombian postage stamp also was issued in her honor in 1959. After her title year in the spotlight, she married a medical doctor and moved to America. She returned to Colombia in 1966, was a member of the Manizales City Council and was director of the Colombian Institute of Tourism.
