BROCKTON – When Tracy Joyce learned she was pregnant seven years ago, one of the first people she told was lifelong friend Stephanie Torres.

She and Torres grew up together in West Bridgewater, and later worked together for the Local 17 Sheet Metal Union in Dorchester, where Torres was a secretary for five years. The two had lunch together every day.

“She was the best worker I have ever met. She never even took breaks. She was a workhorse,” Joyce, 36, a West Bridgewater resident, said Tuesday. “She ran that place when she was working there.”

She is among people who are mourning the loss of Torres, 40, a Brockton resident who was killed in a pedestrian accident on Belmont Street Saturday night.

Torres had pulled over to pick up groceries that had fallen out of her truck when she was struck about 6 p.m. Saturday near the Belmont Street entrance to Brockton High School, police said.

Her sister, Melissa Herbert of Raynham, said Tuesday that her sister was pronounced dead about 4 p.m. Monday afternoon after suffering severe blood loss to her brain.

“Everybody’s trying to make sense of everything,” said Herbert, 35, who described her older sister as a loving and caring woman who was adored by her friends and family.

Torres, as an organ donor, will help others who are awaiting transplants, her sister said.

Police Lt. Ken LeGrice said Tuesday he does not expect charges will be lodged against the 19-year-old driver who struck Torres.

“There are times when accidents happen that are truly accidents, through no fault of the operator of the motor vehicle,” LeGrice said.

Torres had left the supermarket “and some items flew out of the back of her pickup truck,” LeGrice said Sunday.

When she stopped her vehicle to pick up the fallen groceries in the roadway, she was struck by a vehicle being driven east on Belmont Street by the Brockton driver, LeGrice said.

“The woman was bent over in the roadway picking up her groceries,” LeGrice said.

Torres was then flown to a Boston hospital, where doctors completed several medical tests before declaring her dead Monday afternoon, her sister said.

Born in Taunton, Torres graduated from West Bridgewater High School in 1993 and then moved to Brockton, her sister said.

She leaves behind an adult son and 4-year-old grandson, and her longtime fiance, Chris Thompson of Brockton.

Mark Salvador of Bridgewater, a family friend, said he introduced Torres to Thompson about 18 years ago.

“He’s heartbroken. He loved her,” Salvador said Tuesday.

Torres previously worked for Salvador as an assistant at his construction company, he said.

Salvador recalled “all the love and happiness that Stephanie brought to so many people.”

“She was a great person,” he said.

Joyce said Torres “would always surprise you with crazy goofy little notes, just things out of the blue.”

“She would always have a gift for somebody. She never cared about herself. She was always worried about other people,” she said.

Torres, the eldest of five siblings, loved her family very much and her family “always counted on her for everything,” Joyce said.

“She would do anything for them. She was the glue that stuck everybody together,” Joyce said.
