Indiana State Senator and 1st Commissioner of the Wabash and Erie Canal. He fought in the Indian Wars and the in the War of 1812. He was the 1st Preseident of the Terre Haute Library, 1824. He was the first Fund Commissioner of the Wabash & Erie Canal, 1832 to 1835. Member of the Indiana State Senate 1828 to 1831, candidate for U.S. Representative from Indiana, 1833. Founder of the Indiana Historical Society, 1830 to 1831. He was the Fund Commissioner for the State Bank of Indiana, 1834. The Town of Linton and Linton Township was named after him. His faith was Presbyterian. Died of a heart attack in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania., January 31, 1835. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Terre Haute, Indiana. His brother-in-law was Col. Thomas Holdsworth Blake.
